Spring 2013 Office Hours
MODIFIED HOURS DURING FINALS WEEK
Wednesday 12:00 - 5:00 PM
Thursday 12:00 - 5:00PM
The aim of the program was to make the residents aware of the different cuisines throughout the world. However it was not possible to cover most of the cuisines. Because of the warm climate we decided to use the outdoor Chapin parking lot with the commons to be used for food serving. Since the semester just got over the residents were in party mood and hence many residents came to attend the event. We started the program with small talk on different cuisines and had an interactive session with the residents and got some very useful tips on how to cook delicious, healthy food in short time.
The Asian heritage month was a huge success amongst the CARA’s program. It started with many residents coming in to see the performances. Around 120 residents came. After everyone was settled the program began with a power point presentation explaining about the different Asian cultural and social major events. Residents were too amazed and excited hearing about cultural tradition in neighboring countries. After this few videos and images were shown of famous festivals celebrated and the different type of dancing and singing traditions in Asia.
We had a full room for the Wednesday afternoon talk, "Evolutionary ecology of geographic range limits in monkeyflowers," with approximately 70 people in attendance, 75% graduate students.
“Listening to Language” was a huge success. Approximately 50 graduate students attended, including many from outside the philosophy department.
The conference featured 8 philosophy graduate students from Professor Gary Mar’s philosophy of language course. The first panel featured collaborative papers from 4 students followed by commentary from professors James DiGiovanna (John Jay College)
and Harvey Cormier (SBU).
We held this event together with RA at Schomburg to have a great culture night.
On that day, there are about 35 people showed up. We ordered the Philippine food, people liked the food very much. We also invited Philippine students to give us a great performance.
People had a lots of fun dancing and playing.

The CARA Game Night began in Chapin Commons at 9:00 PM on March 23rd. This program is aimed at enhancing good friendships between residents at Chapin Complex, and relaxing graduate students here who just finished mid-terms. We’ve made thorough research on choosing the games and came up with three that we thought would be fun (as which later proved is) yet safe. As stated in the proposal, the games include “Texas Hold em Poker”, “Three-kingdoms” and “Snakes and ladders”.
Spring Break Party is the event that happened just on the start day of spring break. The theme of the event is to play few fun games and discuss about places to visit during the spring break. All the residents were divided into two groups namely red team and blue team. The game is called as "Yes-No-May be" where the one representative(who was given a famous personalities name) from a team tries to answer 20 questions from his/her team with only these 3 responses (Yes- No- May be). With his/her responses, the team members should identify who that famous personality is.
We held this event for people to celebrate the St Patrick’s Day. People just finished their mid-term, the residence here can have kind of relaxing by attending this party
On that day, there are about 20 people showed up and we bought food from Bagel Express and Stop&Shop. People enjoyed the food and had lots of fun.
