Tue, 21 May 2013 00:13:32 +0000admin8201 at http://www.sbgso.orgBudget Committee Decision on Campus Recreation Center Reimbursement

Fellow graduate students,

The Budget of the Committee acted with the responsible management of GSO funds in mind to not increase the line for campus recreation center reimbursements (doing so would lead to a budget deficit). As always, the Graduate Student Organization has limited funds and each reimbursement is on a first-come first-serve basis. I am one of the people who turned in the form after the money ran out. It's unfortunate and inconvenient, but all lines must have limits. Adjustments have been made for next year.

As we do not have more money for this line, recreation reimbursements for this fiscal year will no longer be accepted.

Evgenia (Jen) Sidorova – Candidate for President
My name is Evgenia (Jen) Sidorova and I have been the GSO Treasurer for the past two years. During my tenure, I have streamlined the GSO financial operations and brought the GSO financial bylaws in compliance with SUNY standards. My involvement in University-wide committees and the already-established productive relationships with the University leadership will allow me to communicate effectively with the University administration.
In just the first year as the Treasurer (the 2nd year in on-going), I raised $93K in donations from the administration. These donations not only enabled the GSO to provide continued support of the Research Access Project (RAP) and other lines, but also allowed to fund the University Café programming. I also made the department, club, and residential support accessible to a wider range of graduate students.
As the President, I will ensure that all graduate students who pay the Student Activity fee are aware of and can take advantage of the GSO provided services. Further, I will improve the existing (e.g., University Café) and develop new programs to enhance social life on campus. I will work on mitigating the University fees that are charged to all graduate students, as well as rally for fair stipends for TAs, GAs, RAs, and other graduate student employees. I will work on involving all departments in the GSO Senate, as well as create initiatives for GSO Senators to join the University-wide committees.
Elect me and we will improve our graduate school experience together.
Tomasz Bakowski – Candidate for Vice President
My name is Tomasz Bakowski. I have served as the Speaker of the Senate of the GSO for the past year. In that time, I’ve acquired significant knowledge regarding the functioning of Stony Brook University and thought seriously about how to make things better for graduate students here. I believe that the Graduate Student Organization can only get better. To do so, we must continue to focus on Communication, Coordination, and Infrastructure. I’ve already spearheaded new initiatives to improve communication with free coffee days, one on one meetings with all Senators, a new website design project. Coordination involves creating more lasting, working relationships with important administrators while not simply towing the line, involving the entire GSO membership in committee assignments on campus, and uniting more closely with the unions. Infrastructure means making it easier for all graduate students to have their input included as part of GSO actions and deliberations as well as incorporating new aspects for professional development for post-graduate careers. These initiatives and ideas are just the beginning of what I hope to be a part of a powerful new step forward in crafting a more responsive, agile, and professional organization that all graduate students can be proud of.
Thomas Kirnbauer – Candidate for Treasurer
Dear Fellow Graduate Students,
My name is Thomas Kirnbauer and I am running to be your 2012-2013 GSO Treasurer. I am pursing my M.B.A. in Finance from the College of Business. Currently, I am the Vice-President for the Faculty-Student Association (FSA) and Treasurer of a graduate student club called the MBA Association. In the past, when I was an undergraduate student, I served as the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Treasurer for Stony Brook. Being involved in the University for a number of years has allowed me to develop a strong working relationship with University Administration. Therefore, I will be able to both recognize change and facilitate conversations with these administrators to make it happen. In addition, as past-Treasurer of USG, I am very familiar with policies and procedures for SUNY and Stony Brook University. I plan on utilizing my knowledge of to enhance the internal procedures of GSO. As Treasurer, I will streamline the financial procedures in an effort to eliminate the student complaints about the backlog or delay of receiving reimbursement checks. In addition, I want to improve the communication between GSO and the Graduate Clubs/Organizations and make everyone aware of the different funding options available. This is just a few examples of the ideas I have. If elected into office, I will make sure your tuition fees are best utilized and your voice is heard!
Mallory Locklear – Candidate for Secretary
I believe one of the main responsibilities of the Graduate Student Organization, and of the Executive Committee in particular, is to strengthen the voice of graduate students in university affairs and ensure that our interests and needs are heard and met. The current and past administrations of the GSO have done a great job improving the graduate student presence in important aspects of university decision-making and policy. The next key step is to renew our voice in the student body itself and encourage graduate students to really utilize the strong presence our organization has worked to promote. As secretary and member of the EC, I will help develop ideas as to how we can continue to advance our influence through greater student awareness and participation. Despite great efforts from the GSO EC and senators, the graduate student community is still largely unaware of the majority of services available to them through the GSO and is even more unaware of the role the GSO has in important campus decisions including campus housing initiatives and faculty hires. Once students really begin to understand our scope as an organization, I believe they will start to see us a resource with which they can more often and more confidently voice their concerns, needs and opinions. Ultimately, fostering greater involvement of the graduate student body will bring the relevance we have established within the university back to the students we represent.
