Senators

This is a listing of the Graduate Departments and their currently active Senators (as of February 27, 2011). All departments are allowed, at least one senator and one alternate senator (see the constitution). Only one can vote at a meeting. Departments with 50-200 can have up to two senators (and one alternate); and departments with over 200 senators can have up to three (and one alternate). If you believe that your department should have more senators or if it is not listed here, please contact the Secretary.

How To Become a Senator

Elections for GSO Senators are currently underway. Find more information and details on how to become a GSO Senator and represent your department here.

In order for you to receive a voting card, all new and returning Senators must confirm their seats by doing the following:

  • If you are a new Senator, you can confirm your seat in one of two ways:

    1. Hold an election in your department through a meeting or by ballot.
    2. Petition to be a senator by collecting signatures of at least 30% of the students in your department or 50 students from your department, whichever is less.

Details of these procedures can be found here (Article V, Section D).
The Petition Form for new Senators can be found here.

  • If you are a returning Senator, you may follow any of the procedures above, or you may post a Call for Nominations for New Senators in your department. If there are no other interested candidates after making the open call advertising the GSO positions available in your department, please provide the GSO-Secretary with a copy of the 'Call for Senators' e-mail distributed to your department. You will then be appointed as a senator. Realize that being a senator last year DOES NOT automatically make you a senator this year as well.

If you are interested in becoming a senator you need to submit the relevant paperwork at least 72 business hours before the Senate meeting you wish to attend as a Senator. For example, if a meeting is on Tuesday you need to submit the application by Thursday at 5:00pm at the GSO office.

Here is a presentation for all the new senators.

If you have submitted the forms to become a senator and you do not see your name here, please contact the Secretary for further instructions.
