Description of Event:
This is an opportunity for students and professors/staff to take a break and celebrate this fun holiday. This is the third year in a row that we are requesting funding from the GSO. The last two years have been major successes! We are downsizing a bit this year and are requesting about half of the usual amount we have requested in the past.
The Graduate Linguistics Society and Department of Linguistics are inviting Dr. Marianne Mithun, Professor at the Linguistics Department at University of California, Santa Barbara, to speak at our semi-annual Linguistics Lecture Series. Dr. Marianne Mithun is the founding president of the Society for Linguistic Anthropology. Dr. Mithun is a leading scholar of American Indian languages and language typology, and she has done extensive fieldwork on a wide variety of American Indian languages and also worked on the cultural aspects of Native American societies.
GRIDLOCK was a 2-day graduate student conference and 3-day art exhibition (October 13-15) hosted by the Department of Cultural Analysis and Theory (previously the Department of Comparative Literary and Cultural Studies) at Stony Brook University. This year, we had the amazing opportunity to host our conference in collaboration with the AC Institute , a premier gallery space in the Chelsea arts district of Manhattan. Our entire conference took place on-site in the gallery location, surrounded by the works of emerging artists and graduate students.
GSO Treasurer, Jen Sidorova, has been elected the Vice Chair of NorthEastern Region for Nationals Association of Graduate and Professional Students (NAGPS) during the NAGPS 25th annual membership meeting on Oct 28-Oct 30 in Boulder, CO.

CARA Quizzical night is the first of the year after CARA’s E- board inception. The name says it all. Quizzical night is aimed at creating a great cultural exchange between different communities of Chapin Apartments. There were 6 rounds in total and the total event is set up in 2 different stages which saw a huge group of enthusiastic residents.

Topic: learn to use the best databases to research companies and industries hiring PhDs. This workshop will be especially valuable to international graduate students looking for additional job opportunities.
