On Monday (4/23/2012), Dr. Miller visited Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology and gave a seminar talk titled “Diversity - Generating Retroelements in Phage, Pathogens, and the Human Microbiome” at noon. It was very well attended, around 40 graduate students and 50 faculty/staff members. Besides the noon talk, Dr. Miller met with graduate students in the morning for one hour discussing the research of his group and what graduate students are working in our department. And he also met faculty members for further discussion of each other’s research. Following the noon seminar, the lunch/career talk took place in the 2nd floor conference room of CMM building between Dr. Miller and around 20 graduate students. We talked about the traditional and alternative career paths for Ph.D. students, including academic faculty path, government research, private sector of biotech, as well as scientific organization. It was a really informative and interesting discussion, and the students got a chance to build connections with this great scientist.
Dr. Miller’s visit ended at the dinner with three graduate student representatives and left Stony Brook for UCLA on Tuesday noon (4/24/2012).
