Graduate Student Emergency Loan Fund

The Graduate Student Emergency Loan Fund (GSELF) was established by the Graduate Student Organization to provide short-term loans to graduate students who are in need of money on an emergency basis, and who do not have alternative means of obtaining a loan. Emergencies include but are not limited to, the death of an immediate family member or a medical emergency for the student or an immediate family member. Emergencies do not include any financial penalty for which the student had prior knowledge. Examples of excluded conditions include routine car repair & maintenance, tax payments, and late paychecks.

To be eligible for this loan, the applicant must be a Stony Brook University graduate student registered in the academic session and demonstrate financial need due to an emergency. GSELF loans are interest free and are funded by contributions from graduate students of Stony Brook University. The loan must be repaid within three months. Any financial aid received by the applicant will be used to pay down the account balance created by this loan. Please see the bi-laws for further information.

How to Submit Your Application

Apply for a GSELF loan online by filling out the GSELF loan application form and sending it as an attachment to Kassandra Hartford.

All applicants are strongly encouraged to submit GSELF applications electronically. If you absolutely cannot submit an electronic application, print out the appropriate application form and leave the completed application in the GSO Office in 227 SAC in a sealed envelope care of Kristina Stoyanova, GSELF Chair. Note that submitting a paper application as opposed to an electronic one will doubtlessly delay the review and processing of your application.

Note to applicants: please read the bylaws before submitting an application.

Contact GSELF Chair Kristina Stoyanova kris.k.stoy@googlemail.com and Kassie Hartfor khartfor@notes.cc.sunysb.edu if you have any questions.
